What is Infrared Communication?
Infrared Remote Controller Method The Infrared remote controller was developed as a substitute of “switch at hand" rather than communication devices. Infrared remote controllers have been created based on exchanging an easy on/off switch for information into infrared signals and sending it to a home electric application.

At the moment of operating a remote controller, “strong and short instant infrared pulses" have occurred. Due to its small quantity of necessary transmission data, such as on/off information, etc., transmission rate corresponds to about 300-1200 bit/sec.

Arrival distance: a condition of a remote controller function is 5 to 10m.
Basic Concept is Uni-directional Communication Method

Usually a remote control and a home electronic application have a 1 to 1 use. Infrared signal is a thin beam shape (usually the infrared beam ranges from under 5 degrees) for the use of reaching other specified home electric applications ,contrast to 1 to 1 use in the usual remote controller and a home electronic application.

Further more, there is no need of confirmation communication success/failure in the communication architecture. Because a confirmation of whether the remote signal is arrived properly to a home electronic application shall be done by the person having the remote controller.

Features of the Infrared Remote Control Method

A communication method by an infrared remote control is not suitable for large amounts of consecutive data transmission. The reason is that it’s a person to person related communication method with no detection in data communication error automatically, its high consumption of energy and its comparatively slow data communication speed.

IrDA Communication Method

IrDA communication standard is a communication method. It enables applications of data communication methods in PDAs, notebook computers and home electric applications. That is the way it is designed based on low consumption of energy, improvement of transmission rate and credibility of data. Also the communication method is a bi-directional mode that differs from remote ones.

The codeless communication range is 0cm-1m between portable home electrical appliances. Also connection range angle is 30 degrees for easy data transmission with devices. The standard was created from of an idea of “replacement of the 1 meter communication cable"

Consumption of Energy is under 1/100

Infrared encode method saves an emission rate of infrared, considers energy use, by securing enough transmission rate. For example, in the case of transmitting data of 9600 bit/sec by the IrDA method in a small information device, the run time of infrared emission is under 1/25 and infrared power is also saved compared with the remote controller mode. Thus consumption of energy, including transmission rate, is less than 1/100 per data unit in transmitting data by IrDA, in comparison with the remote control mode.

Communication Process defined Protocol

In the IrDA communication method, other than physical features of infrared (pulse shape etc.), communication process is defined to secure communication data compatibility. It is defined in IrDA standards strictly, such as how to implement the inquiry data and how to inspect a data error then de-bug and re-send if necessary. These control mechanisms of the communication process is called protocol.

A Difficult aspect in the IrDA method is that it’s quite complicated to program in communication protocols as necessary. Link Evolution’s DeepCore® is a middleware that enabled complicated protocol operability in various embedded environments.
